Yesterday was the saddest day for all of us. We received the news about Ricardo late yesterday afternoon from Carolyn Sterrett. Johnny and I are just devastated. Please share your thoughts and your fondest memories of Ricardo. It's sure to be quite a catalog! Yesterday Johnny spoke with him in the morning before he headed out to tour. Many of you know the nature of the early morning, full throttle coffee-fueled calls with Rico. Infusion of energy and Rico's unique hilarity. Sharing on this blog is about the only thing that may ease the pain a bit.
We love you, brother!
I am going to miss your smiling face. I am going to miss you blowing by me going up Millcreek or on Wasatch Blvd on your bike, talking about the Patriots. We are all going to miss everything about you, Ricardo!

We're so sad! Ricardo was the energizer bunny, always ahead of me on his bike, always ahead of me on his skis, and always, always, that megawatt smile. He loved life, loved his friends, and-- let's not forget-- he loved the funk! Let's all dance one for Ricardo.
ReplyDeleteA little memory of Ricardo's boundless energy and early morning habits....
ReplyDeleteRicardo was so excited that Einstein's Bagels was going to be opening up a store in his neighborhood (this had to be 10-12 years ago?...help me here Mac and Nat) As Ricardo enthusiastically awaited opening morning, he planned many early morning bagel runs to Einsteins's before touring or biking.
Ricardo planned to be there johnny-on-the-spot on opening morning for his first neighborhood bagel experience. He figured 6:00am was a reasonable opening time (hey, 5:00 would be even better for Ricardo) for bagels. Much to Ricardo's disgust, Einstein's didn't open until 7:00 AM. 7:00 AM? The nerve! Imagine the store manager's surprise when he came out to open the doors and found Ricardo with his face pressed up against the glass and all steamed up!
We are blessed to have known you and our lives are forever changed because of it.
Ricardo introduced me to my husband-to-be just before moving away from Denver to begin his masters at Univ of Michigan. I am proof of what his wife said about him bringing people together. I have 3 children thankful for his social gifts, and bunches of relatives who know him from the oversize wedding photo in my childhood house in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. As you can guess he helped make our reception unforgettable.
ReplyDeleteOne of the early dates with my husband was a group outing led by Ricardo where we had great rum drinks and danced to Roy Buchanan live at the Mercury Cafe. Groups of us skiied together in A Basin in Co and I got some early ski lessons from him and fellow Sohio Geologists. We called him mountain goat when we hiked the big peaks around Denver.
I knew his sharp mind and wit, and generous heart even earlier as a fellow Geology major at Middlebury College in VT. He gave 'The Gift Outright' (R. Frost) at all times, himself.
My memories of him are all keepers.
My sympathies to his family and friends.
